The Lesson I Learned from my New Passport Photo

By Anne Sagendorph-Moon

A few weeks ago I had to get a new photo to renew my passport so off I went to the CVS drugstore not too far from my house.

And guess what? They don’t let you smile anymore. The government doesn’t want any smiley faces. So I couldn’t count on my smile to make me pretty ( in my opinion).

I figured it didn’t matter. It’s a passport photo for goodness sake. And then I saw it and it changed my entire view and judgement of myself.

I discovered I looked not just pretty but real, and deep and even powerful. I am 76 (as of April 13th) and let me tell you, most of the time I see the lines around my mouth!

Lord we are hard on ourselves.

I know on my website homepage I say: Every day women look in the mirror and say unkind things to themselves. We compare ourselves to others (are we pretty? are we doing our business good enough?).

And that was exactly what I was doing day after day. Seeing the lines around my mouth. WOW!

That is so not all of who I am. Nor is whatever you focus on all of who you are.

So I’m putting the photo here to celebrate that, yes, I am older.

And because of that I am now a better coach, a better healer and definitely a better magician. Because it takes a long time to be a good magician.

It is my hope you too will celebrate how you look and all the experiences that have made you brilliant and beautiful and amazing.
